Tess Mayne is a registered speech-language pathologist (SLP) and the founder of Words Plus, a private speech-language therapy practice based in Oakville, Ontario that supports autistic and minimally-speaking children and their families through neurodiversity-affirming, relationship-based care, including the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).
Before founding Words Plus, Tess worked for nearly 14 years at Ontario’s largest children’s treatment centre as an SLP, supporting hundreds of children and families across several specialized teams, including:
In 2024, Tess saw the need to establish Words Plus, combining her extensive experience with her strong values, to focus on her passions: neurodiversity, AAC, and collaboration. This decision was shaped by families she worked with who knew their children were capable, thoughtful, and intelligent, yet repeatedly encountered systems that underestimated them or focused primarily on what they could not do.
Through her work with autistic and minimally-speaking children, Tess saw how barriers to communication could lead to significant frustration and distress, particularly when children did not have access to communication tools that matched their strengths. She also saw how transformative it could be when families were treated as true partners and children were supported through approaches that respected their autonomy, interests, and ways of thinking.
In 2025, Tess launched Words Plus to offer this kind of care: neurodiversity-affirming, relationship-based, collaborative speech-language therapy that supports children to communicate and connect in ways that are meaningful to them.
Tess brings a wealth of expertise, passion, and a deep commitment to helping children communicate and connect authentically. At Words Plus, she combines advanced training, evidence-based practices, and a warm, collaborative approach to help create meaningful and lasting change for every child and family she supports.
Whether you’re seeking guidance for early intervention, exploring AAC, or navigating autism-related needs, Tess is here to help. Contact Words Plus today to learn how.
